UCI Health is seeking artists to participate in an ambitious art program being developed for its new medical complex under construction in Irvine.

This Call for Artists seeks original works of art for UCI Health — Irvine, which will be the nation’s first all-electric, carbon-neutral medical center when it opens beginning in spring 2024.

The new $1.3 billion medical campus at Jamboree Road and Birch Street will bring coastal and south Orange County unparalleled expertise, leading-edge treatments and the finest evidence-based care that only an academic health system can offer. It will include the 168,000 square foot Joe C. Wen & Family Center for Advanced Care, the five-story Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center and Ambulatory Care building, and a seven-story, 350,000 square foot acute-care hospital and emergency department.

In these buildings, the art committee plans to display original works in all media, including artwork that celebrates the flora and fauna of our region, its marshes, chapparal, beaches, parklands and missions. In addition, the art program aims to highlight the diversity of Southern California, its vibrant cultural heritage and activities that promote health and wellness.

The medical complex will overlook the San Joaquin Marsh Reserve and feature nature trails that will serve to enhance the health and well-being of patients and visitors alike. It also will be adjacent to the new UCI Institute and Museum for California Art, to which The Irvine Museum has donated its permanent collection of California plein-air paintings.

Opportunities for original works include sculpture and other media. We also are interested in licensing the rights of two-dimensional art to be printed as murals and as framed giclées.

Artists need not have experience creating giclées, just a high-resolution image of their work for a one-time license.  The UCI Health Art Program has a need for hundreds of giclée prints. This Call for Artists includes artworks ranging from $150 to $50,000.

James Irvine Swinden, president of The Irvine Museum and chair of the UCI Health Donor Art Committee, encourages you to respond to the call and have your work considered for this exciting project. The art committee is made up of knowledgeable art collectors and artists from the community. The leadership of UCI Health will be selecting artists for licensing, purchasing and/or commissioning, based on their submissions of previous work. The evaluation of the artwork will be based on quality, appropriateness to project themes and their ability to provide inspiration and comfort to our patients and visitors. We will be following the literature of evidence-based design artwork for healthcare environments.
