At Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital, young people in the Arts for Healing Program tell their stories through the arts. At a time when illness and hospitalization challenge their sense of self, they are empowered by their creative voice to realize their resilience.

In the Telling Our Stories project pediatric patients used written and spoken word, songwriting, music, digital art, virtual reality and video to share their stories. Patients explored their unique identities by connecting with life defining moments and their own heartbeats.

Recorded using a Bluetooth stethoscope, their heartbeats became the symbol of their inner struggles and embodied wisdom. The creative application of the patients’ heartbeat recordings to unify their journey expressions through sound, words, images and the virtual space provides powerful access to the interior life of young people living with life changing healthcare experiences.
