Listen to a conversation with Jeremy Kamps and Trixie Ndanu Kioko about the creation of their play, Skin to Skin. The play delves into the lives of three women—Aricely, Hazel, and Janae—narrating their journeys through conception, pregnancy, and childbirth while confronting both systemic and personal challenges.
Skin to Skin sheds light on the intersection of race and maternal health, celebrating the sacred and transformative nature of Black birthing experiences. It highlights the disparities in healthcare systems and advocates for a midwifery model of care, emphasizing patient autonomy, holistic practices, and inclusive representation.
By weaving personal narratives with broader sociopolitical movements, such as Black Lives Matter, the play employs storytelling as a tool to inspire community dialogue, confront erasure, and drive social change.t
Houses on the Moon is the Producer of Skin to Skin and creative collaborator with Jeremy and Trixie.
“Houses on the Moon Theater Company is a home for unheard stories. Our projects begin with relationship building, collaboration, and partnership with grassroots community organizations to identify an urgent social need; a vital untold story that must be heard. Our creation process includes extensive research, first-person storytelling workshops, and interviews, and our work is presented Off Broadway as well as in non-traditional spaces throughout New York City, the US, and internationally. Whether they are LGBTQ asylum seekers, undocumented youth, individuals impacted by gun violence or families grappling with mass incarceration, we collaborate with communities to theatrically amplify their untold stories, create awareness, offer support, and ultimately foster a more empathetic world.”
